The problem with "just get them tired"
A lot of youth performance training is indistinguishable from punishment: shuttle runs until someone throws up, then a random circuit. Athletes get tired, parents see effort, and almost nothing measurable changes — because the qualities that decide games are speed, force production, and durability, and none of the three are trained by fatigue alone.
Good programming looks calmer than people expect. Fewer reps, more rest, clearer intent, and numbers that move over months.
Four pillars of development
Speed is trained, not just conditioned
Sprinting fast requires sprinting fast — short, fully rested efforts of 10 to 30 yards. Long conditioning runs build a fitness base but do not make an athlete faster, and often crowd out the work that would.
Strength is the foundation under speed
Force applied into the ground is what changes stride quality, change of direction, and contact ability. A well-coached squat, hinge, push, pull, and carry pattern covers the majority of it.
Durability beats peak output
The athlete who trains all season outperforms the athlete who peaks in July and misses October. Hamstring, groin, ankle, and shoulder resilience work is programmed year-round, not rehabbed after the fact.
The calendar drives the program
Off-season builds, pre-season sharpens, in-season maintains. Training the same way in every phase is the most common reason athletes stall or arrive at playoffs flat.

Five questions to ask a performance coach
- 1.Can the coach explain why each block exists in relation to your athlete's season?
- 2.Is anything measured — sprint times, jump height, load progression — or is it only how tired the athlete feels?
- 3.Is technique coached and corrected, or is the session mostly supervised exhaustion?
- 4.Does the plan change between off-season, pre-season, and in-season?
- 5.Is the athlete's school and club training load accounted for in the weekly total?
Managing total load during a school season
Between school practice, club sessions, and games, many Central Kentucky athletes are already near their weekly ceiling before any extra training is added. The coach's job in-season is subtraction as often as addition: keep one or two short, high-quality strength sessions, protect sleep, and let the sport supply the conditioning.

Sessions at home before or after practice remove the drive across town, which is usually the difference between a program that runs for a full off-season and one that fades in week three.
Frequently asked questions
At what age can a young athlete start strength training?
Major sports-medicine bodies support supervised resistance training for youth athletes once they can follow coaching cues and maintain positions safely — commonly around ages 11 to 13, though readiness is individual rather than strictly age-based. The emphasis at that stage is technique, body control, and consistency, not maximal loads.
Will lifting stunt my child's growth?
There is no credible evidence that properly supervised resistance training harms growth. Injury risk in youth training is overwhelmingly associated with unsupervised maximal attempts and poor technique, not with strength training itself.
How many days a week should a high-school athlete train?
Two to three strength sessions per week in the off-season and one to two in-season is a reasonable range for most athletes, adjusted down when school and club practice volume is already high.
Should my athlete specialize in one sport year-round?
Early single-sport specialization is associated with higher overuse-injury rates and does not reliably improve long-term outcomes. Varied movement exposure through the teenage years tends to produce more durable athletes.
Is speed training different from conditioning?
Yes, and confusing the two is the most common programming error. Speed work is short, maximal, and fully rested. Conditioning is repeatable effort. Doing speed work while fatigued trains slower mechanics.
Can performance training happen at home?
